Leon Zhan

Opening celebration: Sat 11 May, 4-6pm

FUTURES is thrilled to present a solo exhibition by Leon Zhan entitled Labyrinths, his debut show with the gallery.

Comprised of reimagined objects and totemic paintings, these works offer an exhilarating confluence of sports, Chinese antiquity and the cinematic, infused with Pop art panache and enigma.

Labyrinths include a cluster of Leon’s ubiquitous vases, plinthed in the gallery's centre. The iconography of American sports teams is harmonised with Chinese porcelain vases from across multiple dynasties, merging the contemporary and the historical, the revered and the common, with slick yet effortless results.

In his hyper-realist paintings, lions rendered in eternal materials are pressed to the surface. These works imbue qualities of early Chinese paintings—sparse, monochromatic, and capturing a particular atmosphere—while incorporating euro-centric modes of painting, creating an infinite cross-cultural universe.
